Country stars Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood are facing a serious lawsuit regarding their platinum-selling duet, “Remind Me.” Songwriter Amy Bowen, known professionally as Lizza Connor, filed a lawsuit against Paisley and Underwood in May stating that the country singers’ duet “Remind Me” was taken from a song she composed of the same.
According to a lawsuit she filed, the young songwriter composed her song in 2008 during a 14-week “Country Music Songwriting Workshop” in Nashville. There, she performed her own version of “Remind Me,” which was critiqued by several advisors, including Kelley Lovelace and Charles DuBois. Following the workshop, Bowen continued performing the song at various local venues, working to improve it.
Three years later, in 2011, Paisley and Underwood recorded a song together also titled “Remind Me.” The song was co-written by Paisley, Lovelace and DuBois. It sold more than one million copies and topped Billboard’s country chart.
Bowen took the case to federal court in Nashville. According to the presiding judge, Bowen can make a sufficient case and Paisley and Underwood could find themselves on trial after more expert testimony is gathered.
There has been no word on when the trial will occur. Bowen is reportedly seeking in excess of $10 million.
