Rumors continue to swirl over whether or not there will soon be a sequel to the 1988 fantasy film Beetlejuice. This week, in an interview with The Daily Beast, Winona Ryder suggested that she may be in the new film saying, “I’m kind of sworn to secrecy, but it sounds like it might be happening.”
Ryder, who played gothic teenager Lydia Deetz in the original film, spoke of the sequel’s script that was penned by Seth Grahame-Smith. “It’s not a remake,” she stated. “It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”
The actress also mentioned how some fans are concerned about how the sequel will compare to the first film. “It’s a very precious movie to people,” she said. “So there are a lot people like, ‘DON’T.'”
Michael Keaton recently confirmed there would be a sequel when asked by TMZ, and Tim Burton is reportedly in talks to return to direct it. “I would never go near [a sequel] if it was not Tim and Michael,” Ryder stated. “Because those guys, I love.”
Beetlejuice grossed $73.7 million back in 1988 and won an Academy Award for Best Makeup. The film helped establish the careers of Ryder, Keaton, and Burton.
