‘The Hobbit’ DOMINATES Box Office Competition

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ has broken a new record for box office sales in December.

Over the weekend ‘The Hobbit’, the first in a trilogy produced by New Line and MGM (with Warner Bros. distributing), earned $84.8 million over the first three days of the film’s debut.

‘The Hobbit’ crushed the box office competition this weekend overtaking the number one spot, with ‘Skyfall’ dropping down to fourth place.

1. The Hobbit – $84.8 million
2. Rise of the Guardians – $7.4 million
3. Lincoln – $7.2 million
4. Skyfall – $7.0 million
5. Life of Pi – $5.4 million

‘The Hobbit’ can attribute it’s record setting pace due to the help of increase prices in IMAX and 3D ticket prices.  Will ‘The Hobbit’ be able to match the box office totals of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ franchise, which earned over $300 million per film from 2001-2003 (without 3D or IMAX prices)?

“We’re very well-positioned to have a huge run,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution.  Fellman is confident that ‘The Hobbit’ will have high numbers during the post-Christmas moviegoers season.
