Pompeii’s debut weekend in theaters was a true disaster. The $100 million film bombed, earning a measly $10 million at the box office in the U.S.
The action-adventure film, starring Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington, tells the tale of a gladiator who tries to save his true love as Mount Vesuvius erupts and destroys the city of Pompeii. The film, which was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, opened to many negative reviews from critics and audiences.
Currently the film’s producer, Constantin Film, is not too concerned about Pompeii’s flop at the box office.
“We knew a film like this with a, shall we say, very international subject matter, wouldn’t do $100 million in the U.S.,” the company’s film and TV head, Martin Moszkowicz, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Internationally, in the territories where it has come out — Korea, France, Russia — the results have been in line with our expectations.”
Internationally, Pompeii opened with $22.8 million over the weekend.
Constantin Film also financed last year’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which made only $31 million on a $60 million budget.
