Iron Man 3 has surpassed Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon to become the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time. The Shane Black-directed Iron Man sequel has earned an estimated $1.18 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Transformers: Dark of the Moon had earned $1.12 billion at the box office during the Summer of 2011.
Will Iron Man 3 overtake $1.51 billion Joss Whedon-directed Marvel’s The Avengers?
Most likely not. The film would have to earn an additional $400 million to take The Avengers’ #3 spot on the all time list. Iron Man 3 does have good chance to surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s fourth place spot at $1.3 billion. If that does occur, Marvel will have the #3 and #4 spots on the highest-grossing films of all time list, a feat they would achieve within back-to-back summers.
At the top of the list James Cameron remains “King of the Box Office” with the #1 and #2 spots. He is the only director to have his films pass the $2 billion mark, first with 1997’s Titanic and again with 2009’s Avatar. Titanic reigned supreme for over 12 years at the top of the chart with $2.1 billion until Cameron broke his own record with Avatar in 2009 with $2.7 billion at the box office.
