Some actors go a lifetime without ever playing a historical figure. Chadwick Boseman is about to play his third in almost as many years. Beginning in television, appearing on episodes of ER, Law & Order as well as the short-lived series Lincoln Heights, Boseman became a breakout star when he played Jackie Robinson in 42, which he would follow up with Get On Up where he played legendary musician James Brown. Now he is set to play Thurgood Marshall. If that name sounds familiar it may be because Marshall would later serve on the United States Supreme Court. He would also play a critical role in desegregating schools in the famed Brown v. Board of Education.
The upcoming film Marshall, set to open October 13, does not revisit Brown v. Board of Education or his days as a Supreme Court Judge. Instead, the biopic shows Thurgood Marshall’s earlier days as a young rabble-rousing attorney where he takes on a criminal case involving a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) accused of sexually assaulting his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson). Josh Gad co-stars as Sam Friedman, a lawyer who works alongside Marshall in the criminal defense.
