Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book is No. 1 at the box office once again – scoring an additional $42.4 million in its third weekend. The live-action family film has accumulated $252 million domestically, $432 million overseas and $684 million globally.
“The Jungle Book has three wins over three weekends, taking on every newcomer. It’s unexpected just how big a hit this has become and how it has had this kind of box office hold,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore.com. “But it was helped by a weekend that was not strong for newcomers.”
Following in second place is The Huntsman: Winter’s War with $9.39 million. The follow-up to 2012’s Snow White & The Huntsman has accumulated $34 million after 10 days in theaters.
The weekend’s new wide releases included Warner Bros.’ Keanu, Open Road’s Mother’s Day and Focus Feature’s Ratchet & Clank – all of which could not defeat Disney’s king of the jungle.
Keanu nearly ranked second place, but fell closely behind in third place with $9.35 million. The R-rated cat comedy, starring Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, received a 75 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a B CinemaScore from moviegoers.

In fourth place, Garry Marshall’s newcomer Mother’s Day grossed $8.3 million. The rom com, starring Julie Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis, received a poor 8 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B-plus CinemaScore.
The movie features intertwining stories and centers on three generations of women in the week leading up to Mother’s Day.

The final weekend newcomer, the animated Ratchet & Clank, failed to make it in the top five at the box office. Instead, the film fell in seventh place with $4.8 million.
The animated adventure, based on the video game series about a wild cat who befriends a robot, features voices from Sylvester Stallone, Paul Giamatti, Rosario Dawson, John Goodman and Bella Thorne.

“There’s no way around it: These three films flopped in their opening weekends,” said Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock.
Rounding out the top five is Barbershop: The Next Cut with $6.1 million in its third weekend, for a grand total of $44.7 million domestically.
The opening of Captain America: Civil War will surely revive the box office slump. “Next weekend, it’s all about Captain America,” says Bock. “It’s going to really kick off the summer.”
