“A monster?” “No, a God.” This summer’s $160M Godzilla hopes to pass the $65 million mark its opening weekend, kicking the R-rated comedy Neighbors out of the top spot at the box office.
Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are betting the giant lizard will launch a new franchise, 16 years after Sony tried to launch its own version starring Matthew Broderick. The latest edition of the Godzilla saga stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins and David Strathairn.
Competition shouldn’t be too rough since Disney’s Million Dollar Arm lead by John Hamm is the only other film opening worldwide this weekend. The studio believes the $25 million movie should open within the $10-12 million range.
Godzilla opens in theaters May 16 worldwide.
