World’s Largest Ferris Wheel Nears Completion in Las Vegas

The world’s largest Ferris wheel will soon be found along the Las Vegas Strip.

The High Roller will be 55 stories high, and its outer wheel is expected to be put in place Monday. Currently, the project can be seen from the entire city, including the airport.  It will open next year and be decorated with 1,500 LED lights

The new ride will stand 550 feet tall, 9 feet higher than the current world’s largest Ferris wheel, the Singapore Flyer.

“It’s going to be an icon,” Project Director David Codiga said. “It’s going to be a part of your visit to Las Vegas if you ride it or not. It’s more or less impossible not to see it if you come here.”

Caesar’s Entertainment Corp. is building the ride as part of a $550 million development, an outdoor plaza across the street from Caesars Palace.

The High Roller will transport riders in large, fixed capsules instead of the traditional small, teetering baskets. It will also take approximately 30 minutes for the wheel to make one complete revolution. To make sure visitors do not get bored on the ride, there will be audiovisual shows in each capsule to complement the sights.

Caesars spokeswoman Christina Karas stated the ticket price to ride the High Roller will be similar to the London Eye Ferris wheel, which is about $30.

The High Roller most likely will not be able to claim itself as the world’s largest Ferris wheel for long. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans last year for 625-foot wheel to be built on Staten Island.

However, “the High Roller will allow you to float over Las Vegas,” Cordiga said.
