This weekend, Hacksaw Ridge hits theaters and marks Mel Gibson’s first directed film in nearly ten years. The biographical World War II film focuses on the story of US Army medic Desmond T. Doss, who is played by Andrew Garfield.

Check out the film’s official synopsis:

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Hacksaw Ridge also stars Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving, Ryan Corr, Teresa Palmer, Richard Pyros and Rachel Griffiths. BackstageOL’s Dave Morales got to sit down with Vaughn to talk about the moving film.

“I loved [the script],” Vaughn said. “I’d never heard the story. It was powerful, this gentleman’s conviction and faith that led him to do these unbelievable things.”

“Nowadays if a movie doesn’t have a clear path to a franchise, it kind of gets thrown out so these kind of movies, these human stories that are about something that can inspire us, they’re unbelievable when they come around,” he added. “They don’t get made as often. And so It was great to be a part of it, and then Mel Gibson is the best director around. So I was thrilled to get a chance to participate in something like this. You know, I love my part. It was a fun character with a lot of good stuff to do, so I was just excited to be a part of it.
