The happiest place on earth is changing the way guest with disabilities can access rides at its Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme parks after a New York Post investigation unveiled that wealthy moms were hiring disabled guides on their trips the parks.
The Manhattan moms would hire the disabled guides, some through agencies for up to $1,000 per day, which would pose as members of the family, allowing the entire group of people access to the front of the line.
A woman who employed this method told the New York Post, “This is how the 1 percent does Disney.” Since the publishing of the article, Disney has said they have been “thoroughly reviewing the situation” and has vowed to take “appropriate steps to deter” the selfish activity.
As of October 9th, guests with a handicapped disability will no longer be allowed to use a Guest Assistance Card to immediately skip to the front of the line. According to a Disney insider, since the Guest Assistance Card method has been abused, Disney is now devising a new plan for handicapped individuals.
The new program will assign reserved times that will be based on the length of the lines for the various attractions, loosely based off of the Fastpass system. Under the new plan, each handicapped guest will be issued a Disability Access Service Code to be used at kiosks to make reservations at all attractions and rides for the duration of their visit.
What are your thoughts on Disney’s new plan? Is it fair for handicapped individuals? Do you know anyone who has employed this method before to skip the line? Give us your thoughts…
