Vince Gilligan: ‘Saul’ Spinoff Could Feature Walter White and Jesse Pinkman Cameos

If you’re still in denial over Breaking Bad coming to an end, there might be a little hope. Vince Gilligan, the producer of the hit AMC series, revealed that he, along with writer and director Peter Gould, are currently working on a spinoff prequel to the acclaimed show.

Gilligan revealed that the prequel will focus on the exploits of criminal lawyer Saul Goodman before he got pulled into the life of meth mastermind Walter White.

Gilligan and Gould originally envisioned Better Call Saul as a half-hour series, but the two have settled on an hour long format, allowing the duo to base the spinoff on a similar template to their acclaimed drama.

“We’re both one-hour drama guys,” Gilligan says, “so we figured, ‘Why not shoot Saul in the same way? Let’s shoot it in Albuquerque; let’s get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let’s do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating.”

Both Gilligan and Gould plan on reversing the drama into a comedy, using a ratio of 75 percent comedy and 25 percent drama. But the two are currently having difficulties deciding on the shows darker moments, given that Bob Odenkirk’s character is known for his comedic relief.

“We’ve had to find the ongoing itch that Saul needs to scratch, so to speak, or else we wouldn’t have much of a show.”

The best news about the new show is that both Bryan Cranston (Walter White) and Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) have expressed interest in making a cameo on the new show.

“Personally, I’d have a hard time resisting putting all these guys in for a cameo or two every now and then,” Gilligan said.

Better Call Saul will air on AMC.  There is no set release date for the series.
