‘Twin Peaks’ Set to Make Comeback 25 Years Later

Twin Peaks, a mystery drama television series that aired for 30 episodes on ABC from 1990 to 1991, will be heading to Showtime in 2016 for a limited series run.

David Lynch and Mark Frost, the creators of the original series, made the announcement Monday. The two will write and produce all nine episodes of the reboot. Lynch will also direct all of them.

The original series centered around FBI agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, who investigates the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer in the fictional Washington town of Twin Peaks. The show also starred Ray Wise, Lara Flynn Boyle, Peggy Lipton, Sherilyn Fenn, and Joan Chen. Though the show was not a ratings success, it went on to become a cult favorite and also spawned a film titled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.

The new series will be set in current day and will continue the storyline that was established during its original run. It is unknown if any of the original stars will appear in the new show, but MacLachlan has already expressed interest in returning.

“What more can I say – Twin Peaks with David Lynch and Mark Frost on Showtime in 2016!” Showtime Networks president David Nevins said. “To quote Agent Cooper, ‘I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.’”

“The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back,” Frost and Lynch added. “We’re very excited. May the forest be with you.”

The series will head into production in 2015 and air in 2016, twenty-five years after the original show ended. Showtime will also air the original series’ two seasons to lead up to the premiere of the new series.
