Last night the best of Broadway gathered for the 68th annual Tony Awards at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The telecast was packed with entertaining performances and many exciting wins.
Hugh Jackman proved to be a charming host for the evening, who hopped his way through the entire opening number. He also turned “Rock Island” from The Music Man into a rap song alongside LL Cool J and T.I. and serenaded each of the best actress nominees. He closed out the night with a performance of “On Broadway.”
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder won best musical, while best play went to All the Way, a drama about President Lyndon B. Johnson played by Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston. Cranston took home his first Tony for the role, which marked his Broadway debut, for best actor in a leading role in a play.
Another star who took home his first Tony last night was Neil Patrick Harris, who previously hosted the Tony awards four times. He won best actor in a leading role for a musical for his part as a German transgender singer in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
It was also a historic night, as Audra McDonald became the most decorated actress in Tony Awards history. McDonald won her sixth Tony Award last night for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. She is the first woman to win a Tony in all four acting categories.
Overall, seven musicals and six plays took home at least one Tony Award last night. Check out the list of winners below.
