Any advertisers looking to purchase 30 seconds worth of air time for Super Bowl XLVIII are out of luck. Ad slots for the big game have sold out two months before kick-off, with spots averaging at $4 million. Some ads reached an all-time high this year with a price tag of $4.5 million per 30 second commercial.
“Because it is in New York it’s 10 times what it could normally be,” said Neil Mulachy, executive of vice president of sales for Fox Sports Media Group. “There are so many opportunities, so many companies and advertising agencies based in New York, and everybody wants to make the splash bigger.”
Everything for Super Bowl XLVIII is more expensive this year than it has been in the last 44 years the games has been played. “Its just an incredible property,” says Mulcahy. “The demand for this is unlike anything else.”
Due to the 30-second commercials’ high price, major brands such as Subway and Cars.com have said they will not be advertising at this year’s Super Bowl. Also, Mulcahy told the L.A Times that there will be fewer movie advertisements at this year’s game than last due to the increase in price.
Companies you can expect to see running ads during this year’s game are Anheuser-Busch, Nestle’s Butterfinger, GM’s Chevrolet, Doritos, Go Daddy, Hyundai Motors, Intuit, Jaguar, Kia Motors, Mars’ Snickers and M&Ms, Oikos’ Dannon yogurt, Pepsi and Wonderful Pistachios.
Super Bowl XLVIII will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday, February 2 and aired on Fox.
