‘Star Trek’ Returning to Television with New Series

A new Star Trek television series is currently in the works.

The new series is being developed for CBS’ All Access streaming service and is expected to premiere in 2017. Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote 2009’s Star Trek film and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, will serve as executive producer for the series.

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” David Stapf, president of CBS TV Studios, said in a statement. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

A special preview of the series will be broadcast on CBS for free, but all episodes of the series will only be available on the streaming service. The subscription for CBS All Access currently costs $5.99 per month and already has every episode of all of the previous Star Trek TV series.

The new series will not be related to the upcoming Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, which is slated to hit theaters in 2016. CBS stated in a press release that the show will “introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations.”

This show will be the sixth series in the Star Trek franchise. The original, which starred Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, debuted in 1966 on NBC. The last series was Star Trek Enterprise, which aired from 2001 to 2005 on UPN.
