Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have once again teamed up with HBO to develop a third World War II miniseries.
Bomber Boys, based on Donald L. Miller’s book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, will follow the stories of young American airmen bringing the fight to Hitler’s doorstep in the skies over Berlin, Hanover, and Dresden.
The is the third miniseries Spielberg and Hanks have developed following the actions of American soldiers in World War II. The duo’s first miniseries, 2011’s Band of Brothers, was based on garnered largely positive reviews and was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, winning six. Their second WWII miniseries The Pacific was released in 2010 and is considered the most expensive miniseries ever produced at an estimated $200 million. The high budget paid off however after the film was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards and won eight.
Graham Yost (FX’s Justified) is expected to write multiple episodes for the new miniseries, much like he did for Band of Brothers and The Pacific. In a recent interview he told THR that Spielberg and Hanks are interested in making a WWII miniseries for all four branches of the military: Army (Band of Brothers), Marines (The Pacific), Air Force (Bomber Boys), and the Navy (TBD).
There is no exact date on when the miniseries will premiere, but some expect HBO to debut Bomber Boys in 2015.
