‘Powerpuff Girls’ Returning to Cartoon Network in 2016
The Cartoon Network announced Monday that it will be rebooting The Powerpuff Girls to air on the network in 2016.
“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” said Cartoon Network’s chief content officer, Rob Sorcher. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”
The original animated series, created by Craig McCracken, aired for 78 episodes from 1998 to 2005. It also won two Emmy awards. The three girls with superpowers—Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup—were also featured in a 2002 film, a 10th anniversary special in 2009, and a TV movie earlier this year that included Ringo Starr voicing a character. The show continues to be a top-grossing brand for the network, with over $2.5 billion in retail sales.
“As the original ambassador of ‘girl power,’ The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation,” Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America for Cartoon Network Enterprises, stated. “With proven success and great content plans in place, there’s so much potential that we’re looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks.”
