The Major League Baseball Association reached an eight year agreement with Fox Sports Media Group and Turner Broadcasting System on Tuesday.
The deal, which takes effect in 2014, gives Fox the rights to broadcast the World Series and MLB All-Star game through 2021. The League Championship series and Division series will be broadcasted on Fox, TBS and the MLB Network.
“Both networks are passionate about baseball and are committed to covering, promoting and growing the sport, and I want to thank them for their continued support,” Commissioner Bud Selig announced on Tuesday.
The amount of revenue the MLB will receive from the deal amounts to over $800 million annually, $500 million coming from Fox.
“We are continuing to evaluate the possibility of a national sports channel,” Randy Freer, co-president of Fox Sports Media Group mentioned during a conference call. Rumors have been swirling that Fox may revamp its SPEED channel into a 24/hr ESPN-style sports news network. Although rumored, no official plans are considered imminent.
