Lucasfilm Cancels ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ After Five Seasons

Lucasfilm announced in a statement today that the company will no longer be producing new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars for Cartoon Network.  The show debuted in 2008 and received critical acclaim from both critics and fans.

Why is Lucasfilm pulling the plug?  Is The Clone Wars story line over?

It looks like Lucasfilm may have bigger aspirations for the show’s story line.

“After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series,” Lucasfilm announced in a statement on the company’s website Monday.

“While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content.”

Matt Lanter, who voices Anakin Skywalker on the show, tweeted today, “Thank you to the fans and everyone who made the Star Wars Clone Wars so special. We had an amazing run!! 5 seasons of Star Wars awesomeness.”

Hopefully this means there is a Clone Wars trilogy in the works over at Lucasfilm.

In other Star Wars news, Lucasfilm has postponed the release date of the comedy series Star Wars: Detours from Robot Chicken co-creators Seth Green, Matthew Senreich and Todd Grimes.

George Lucas explained today that the story line for Detours was “conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy, and in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense.”
