Actress Krysten Ritter has landed the lead role in Marvel’s upcoming Netflix TV series, Jessica Jones, according to Deadline.
In the series, Ritter will star as a superhero with post-traumatic-stress-disorder who retires and becomes a detective to help both regular people and superheroes. She will play alongside The Following‘s Mike Colter, who is said to be the favorite for the male lead, Luke Cage.
Sources have informed Deadline that the actress was one of the five contenders for the role. After a chemistry read with Colter, she got the part and beat out Warm Bodies‘ Teresa Palmer.
Jessica Jones, written and produced by Melissa Rosenberg, will be the second in the four live-action TV series deal between Netflix and Marvel. The first is Daredevil, which is almost finished shooting its first season.
“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling,” president of Marvel Entertainment Alan Fine said of the partnership. “Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty.”
Best known for her work on Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, and Breaking Bad, Ritter will next be seen in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes.
The 13-episode series will arrive on Netflix possibly in late 2015.
