Kevin Clash – Voice of Elmo – Resigns From Sesame Street

Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo, has resigned from his PBS gig at Sesame Street after a second accusation of inappropriate relations with an underage boy.

Cecil Singleton claims he met Clash back in ’93 when Clash was 32 and he was 15.  In Singleton’s lawsuit he claims Clash “groomed [the accuser] to gain his trust by, among other things, taking him to nice dinners and giving him money.”

Singleton is demanding more than $5 million in the lawsuit.

Sesame Workshop responded to the news saying, “Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.”

Why did Singleton wait almost 20 years to file the suit?

Maybe it has something to do with Kevin Clash paying the first accuser $125,000 to recant his statement.  That accuser, Sheldon Stephens, has now expressed regret in signing said document.
