After 10 years of working on-screen and writing behind the scenes on Saturday Night Live, Jason Sudeikis will not be returning to the show this fall.
Sudeikis confirmed the news on the David Letterman show Wednesday night when he went to promote his new film We’re the Millers. He did not specify why he is leaving SNL, but his film career has been doing very well over last few years.
SNL is currently on summer break, with writing and production set to resume back in August for the fall season. Sudeikis joked with Letterman saying that around this time of year he gets an “itch” where he gets that “going back to school” feeling and brainstorms a lot of sketch ideas for the new season. Unfortunately, he will not be returning after summer break.
“You start to get that itch probably in August, where all these sketch ideas will show up and I’ll be like, ‘Well, can I make this sketch idea last 90 minutes and turn it into a movie!?’ Probably not. Probably not, yeah,” Sudeikis told Letterman.
Sudeikis is one of many cast members that have decided to leave the sketch comedy show this year. Bill Hader and Seth Meyers also left the show this earlier this year. Hader is focusing on his and his wife’s successful film careers, while Seth will be replacing Jimmy Fallon on the Late Show when Fallon replaces Jay Leno on the Tonight Show.
