Grammy Awards Score Second Largest Audience In 21 Years

Last night the 56th Grammy Awards delivered the second biggest audience for the show in over two decades with 28.51 million viewers.  The three hour and 45 minute awards show was packed full of performances by music’s biggest stars, but featured only ten award presentations throughout the marathon.

Only the 54th Grammy Awards posted a higher audience since 1993.  A record 40 million viewers tuned into the Grammys in 2012 due to the passing of Whitney Houston the night before the awards show.  Compared to last year, the Grammy’s television share increased by only 130,000 viewers.  This is the first year since 2010 that the Grammys were held in January due to scheduling conflicts with the Winter Olympics.

Online nearly 5.5 million viewers took advantage of the show’s On Demand and streaming functions, a 100% increase over last year.  SocialGuide is calling the 56th Grammy Awards the biggest social television event of the 2013-2014 season to date, with over 15.2 million people tweeting about the show during the Eastern and Central time zone broadcast alone.
