Dish Unveils Online Sling TV at $20 Per Month

Dish TV is launching an online television service called Sling TV for just $20 per month.

Sling TV from Dish Network will offer a set of 12 channels that includes Disney, ESPN, CNN, TNT and other basic cable channels for just $20 per month. The online television service will provide live stream and video on demand, but it will not include the DVR feature most cable and satellite providers offer. Sling TV will still allow viewers to pause, rewind and fast forward live and on-demand programs. The service will not provide broadcast TV networks such as ABC, FOX, CBS and NBC. Dish anticipates to offer broadcast programing later on.

“Those networks are becoming very expensive,” said Roger Lynch, Dish’s exec VP of advanced technologies. In many cases, people without pay-TV already access broadcast programming via an antenna or through Hulu”, Lynch added.

Dish will also offer add-on packages for additional kids or sports programing provided by the channels.

Sling TV can be accessed through a range of internet-connected devices in order to stream the service and will not require its own TV box. The service can be streamed through Roku TVs; Amazon’s Fire TV box and Fire TV Stick; Google Nexus Player; LG Electronics’ smart TVs; select Samsung Smart TVs; Microsoft’s Xbox One, and many more available online media streaming devices.

Sling TV will launch sometime in the first quarter of 2015.
