Discovery Channel to Air ‘Everest Jump Live’

Discovery Channel has officially scheduled the date to air Everest Jump Live.

Everest Jump Live will be broadcasted live worldwide on the Discovery Channel on Sunday, May 11 if the weather permits. Mountain climber, BASE jumper and Wingsuit flyer Joby Ogwyn will climb to the top of Mt. Everest and then plunge from the mountain in a wingsuit. The wingsuit will be equipped with cameras to give a bird’s-eye view of the jump.

Ogwyn has 20 years of mountaineering experience, eight years of wingsuit flying and has set world records at Mt. Everest. He became the youngest American to make it to the top of Everest when he was 24 years old. Ogwyn set the world record in 2008 for the fastest ascent of Mount Everest, when he climbed from the base of the south side route to the summit in nine-and-a-half hours (usually takes about three to four days).

Now the 39 year-old will attempt the first wingsuit flight off the summit of Mount Everest live on the Discovery Channel.

Discovery will broadcast five nights of live programs leading up to the event starting on May 5 titled “Everest: Live From Base Camp”. “Live From Base Camp” will be hosted by Kyle Martino of NBC Sports and Chris Jacobs of Discovery and Velocity. They will be delivering on-ground coverage at Mt. Everest base camp.

The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore will serve as chief meteorologist and keep an eye tracking any unpredictable weather conditions at Mt. Everest for Ogwyn’s scheduled live jump. NBC News’ Willie Geist will host alongside Cantore during “Everest Jump Live” on the Discovery Channel which will air in 224 countries and territories.

Weather permitting, Everest Jump Live will air on Sunday, May 11 starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
