‘Degrassi’ Ending After 14 Drama-Filled Seasons

As the saying goes all good things must come to an end. In 1979 the Degrassi franchise began with The Kids of Degrassi. This eventually led to Degrassi High which ended in the early 1990’s. In 2001 Degrassi: The Next Generation was born and so was the beginning of a show that captivated teen audiences for over a decade

The new Degrassi brought back the original cast as adults to help lead and mentor the new generation that walked the troublesome halls of Degrassi High. This helped the show to stay relatable to both parents whom grew up with one cast and their teens who fell in love with the new generation.

The show touched on taboo and controversial issues that teens experienced in their everyday life such as teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, body image issues and teens struggling with sexuality. No two seasons were alike as the show changed and grew with every generation that passed through the halls of Degrassi High. The show on occasion had some episodes censored, deemed too racy for American television. In one memorable episode, Jimmy Brooks (whom you may now know as Drake) was shot in school and became paralyzed.  This is just one example that the writers and producers of Degrassi did to touch on topics such as paralysis, ailments, and even mental disorders that many teen shows were not tapping into.

The two week season finale event will kick off at at 9PM (CST) on Monday with an hour long special that will involve the high school seniors preparing for their prom and graduation, as we all prepare to say goodbye to an era.
