“Things are changing” says Jimmy Darmody, the protege of Nucky Thompson played by Michael Pitt in the HBO Original Series Boardwalk Empire.
Produced by Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire engulfs you in the world of Prohibition-Era Atlantic City.
Steve Buscemi takes on the role of Nucky Thompson, the corrupt yet fair treasurer of Atlantic City. Buscemi’s character is based on Enoch L. Johnson, the real life political boss and racketeer of the early 20th century. Other real-life characters include Michael Stuhlbarg as New York gangster Arnold Rothstein (notorious for the Black Sox Scandal), Stephen Graham as the young yet violent, low-level Chicago gangster Al Capone and Vincent Piazza as Charles “Lucky” Luciano, the man who would become known as the “Father of Organized Crime”.
HBO definitely spared no expensive on the first season by producing the most expensive television pilot episode ever at $18 million. The money and hard work definitely paid off for HBO, earning Boardwalk Empire a Writers Guild of America Award, a Golden Globe, three Screen Actor’s Guild Awards and two awards at the Visual Effects Society Awards.
For anyone who has not yet seen the first season it is not too late. The American Film Institute named Boardwalk Empire one of the ten “best television programs of the year”. This program has received universal acclaim and is, in my opinion, by far the best program on television.
The new season is scheduled to start this fall on Sunday, Sept. 25th at 8pm (CST) on HBO.
