American Idol, now in its 12th season, has been sinking in ratings lately. Last week’s ratings dropped very low, only around 11 million viewers tuned in. That is an overall 22% drop since last season. The show better make some drastic changes if it wants to keep the public tuned in next season.
Big changes to the show may include getting rid of theme nights, new executive producers and even replacing all four judges they have now: Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban.
Executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick have been running the show since the beginning, but might be replaced due to fans wanting more upbeat music choices.
Although American Idol has been playing this game for years now, maybe another big change to the layout of the show and different celebrity judges will help shake it up.
The general audience wants to watch this show for the contestants and their upcoming talent, not to to witness Minaj and Carey battle it out. A production insider released this statement to The Hollywood Reporter:
“The show has always taken pride in being about the contestants, not the judges. And if the judges had a little rapport with each other, it wouldn’t be all about them. Instead, all anybody ever wants to talk about is how the judges don’t get along. It’s exactly what producers didn’t want.”
Idol’s summer tour may be coming to a close in the future too, to help save costs.
