Facebook In Talks to Purchase ‘Drone Satellite’ Firm

Facebook is currently interested in acquiring Titan Aerospace, a company that produces drones to replace satellites, for an estimated price of $60 million, according to media reports.

Titan Aerospace specializes in high flying, solar powered drones capable of staying airborne for up to five years at a time and would be a more cost-effective alternative to orbital satellites.

The switch to drones would grant Facebook the ability to beam wireless Internet access to users in undeveloped parts of the globe, allowing the social networking site to advance in their efforts towards Internet.org, a project that would allow for billions of people without Internet access in locations such as Africa and Asia to be connected.

Facebook has yet to comment on the matter, but when Titan Chief Executive Vern Raburn was asked whether if Facebook is intending to buy the drone company or a large order of its planes he expressed,  “I can’t comment one way or the other.”
