Could Facebook Start Charging to Send Messages?

Facebook announced today to the Wall Street Journal that they have begun testing a new system which would require users to pay a $1 fee to send some messages on the social networking site.

According to Facebook the changes are “imposing a financial cost on the sender may be the most effective way to discourage unwanted messages and facilitate delivery of messages that are relevant and useful.”

Doubtful.

The real reason the change may be coming is because their shares are down 28% percent since the company went public in May. Some of the company’s executives are already jumping ship before a financial catastrophe could occur.

Facebook’s #2 honcho, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, has already cashed out around $50 million of her shares since May. Facebook General Counsel Theodore Ullyot and Chief Accounting Officer David Spillane have also sold off millions of their stock as well.

It seems like it may soon be time to start hopping over to Google+.

Will you pay the fee?
