WWE Legend Dusty “The American Dream” Rhodes Dead at 69

On June 11, 2015 the WWE Universe said goodbye to one of their most beloved athletes Dusty Rhodes. Dusty “The American Dream” Rhodes, whose real name was Virgil Runnels, was known for his humble beginnings and an amazing gift of gab that captured the hearts of millions. The 69-year-old made his debut in 1968 and wowed the crowd whether being portrayed as a hero or heel.

Although he did not have the traditional physique of a wrestler there were no limitations on his athleticism. He was known for his signature move known the “Bionic Elbow” as well as his long time feud with fellow wrestler Rick Flair. In one of his most memorable moments Rhodes gave a speech directed towards Rick Flair which became known as the “Hard Times” speech. The speech gave hope to millions of American proving that even the son of a plumber could accomplish his dreams, standing as a sign of hope and admiration for the common man.

Along with encouraging millions that the humblest of beginnings can result in a rich outcome, he also integrated his two sons into his craft. His sons Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels) soon became a part of the wrestling world and proudly carried on the family tradition. The father-sons trio would make one of their most memorable appearances in 2007 prior to Dusty Rhodes being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

As the WWE announced his passing social media lit up with condolences and praises of his legacy. Fellow wrestlers Tweeted messages about his impact on their own careers and how deeply he will be missed as a friend and a wrestling icon.

Rhodes left the world of wrestling with an astounding number of accomplishments and titles including three NWA Championships, induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and most importantly winning the hearts of people worldwide. Being able to connect with the common man is what made Rhodes The American Dream, a man who soon will not be never be forgotten.
