The 2014 FIFA World Cup will kick off Thursday in Brazil. For the next month, 32 teams will compete to be the next World Cup champion, with the final game taking place July 13 in Rio de Janeiro. Before the tournament even begins, here’s a look at some of the top contenders in the tournament who are predicted to take it all.
Brazil
Most analysts predict that the host country will be the one hoisting up the golden trophy next month. Brazil has won the tournament the most with five titles, with the most recent one in 2002. The team consists of many young stars who have the ability to make some amazing plays and also beat Spain in the Confederations Cup last summer. With their home advantage, they will have a lot of confidence since Brazil has not lost a game at home in almost 12 years. However, the Brazilians also face much pressure and high expectations which could cause them to falter.
Germany
Considered by many as the best team in Europe, Germany could also take the title. The Germans have a well-balanced and very talented team. However, Brazil’s weather conditions could be a factor in how well the Germans are able to play since they are not used to the country’s stifling heat.
Spain
Spain won the last World Cup back in 2010 and will be seeking to retain the title. The Spanish have some of the best players and also won the past two Euro tournaments, showing that they are certainly capable of winning the World Cup again. If they accomplish this feat again, Spain would become the third country to win consecutive World Cup tournaments after Italy and Brazil. The Spanish will have to face some tough competition during the group stages though, playing against the Netherlands and Chile.
Argentina
The Argentinians have won two of the last three World Cups held in the Americas. Argentina also has star players, including one of the greatest players of all-time with Lionel Messi, who has Champions League and La Liga titles, but has yet to become a World Cup champion. Messi is predicted to be a major contender for the Golden Boot award. Despite the team’s great players, the Argentinians lack a balanced team and their goalkeeper Sergio Romero has not been having a stellar season, which could potentially leave them defeated.
