The 2014 FIFA World Cup has only been on for a week, and the major sporting event has already dominated Facebook. There have been more interactions on the social media site about the tournament than for the Super Bowl, the Sochi Olympics, and the Academy Awards combined.
141 million people have commented, “liked,” or shared posts about the World Cup since it started on June 12. In total, there have been 459 million interactions about the event.
In comparison, the last Super Bowl had 50 million people talking about it on Facebook for a total of 185 million interactions, the Winter Olympics in Sochi had 45 million people with 120 million interactions, and this year’s Oscars had 11.3 million people with 25.4 million interactions.
“We always see a large level of conversation on Facebook around big sporting events,” said Facebook’s vice president of global operations and media partnerships Justin Osofsky. “But what we’re witnessing around the World Cup has been extraordinary.”
85% of the conversation is occurring among people outside of the U.S. Geographically, the most Facebook interactions are occurring in Brazil, followed by the U.S., the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Mexico.
