Watch the Metrodome Get Demolished
Named the worst sports stadium in America in 2012, Minneapolis’ Metrodome is finally getting demolished to make way for a new stadium that is expected to be completed in 2016.
Although dynamite wasn’t in the original proposal to bring the stadium down, constructions crews decided to use the explosive to expedite the process. Sunday’s demolition used 84 charges of dynamite in 24 columns to take down the ring beam around the roof.
You might remember the 2010 video that went viral after the Metrodome’s roof collapsed due to snow prior to a Vikings game against the NY Giants. The game ended up having to be moved to Detroit.
The Metrodome opened in 1982 and was home to the Minnesota Vikings until the 2013 season. The Vikings will play at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium during the 2014 and 2015 seasons until moving to their new home in 2016.
The stadium was host to a number of organizations besides the Vikings, including the Minnesota Twins (1982-2009), Minnesota Golden Gophers football (1982-2008) and baseball (1985-2013), and even the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves (1989-1990).
