The Washington Redskins have been the Washington Redskins since 1933 – when owner George Preston Marshall transitioned from the name Boston Braves to the Boston Redskins, then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1937 – but suddenly the name is no longer acceptable?
That seems to be the case, with the titled “Redskins” causing uproar among American football fans these days. Opinions about the franchise’s nickname have grown louder, with the name being declared highly offensive to the Native American population. However, despite the growing public pressure, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder stands firmly on his decision not to change the team’s name.
It’s clear that the Washington Redskins’ name is un-favored in the world of football, but what are football fans’ thoughts on other professional names, such as the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Blackhawks? Do these teams need to change their names as well?
Voice your opinion. Is it time for the Washington Redskins to change their name?
