U.S. Olympian alpine skier Julia Mancuso ditched the skies this week to catch some waves in Sochi, Russia.
After winning a bronze medal in the women’s super combined in the Sochi Winter Olympics last week, Mancuso decided to do one more memorable thing in Russia. Mancuso decided to go surfing in the Black Sea with her handheld camera after she found a local man who builds surf boards by hand in his garage.
“There are real waves in Sochi,” Mancuso said. She ended up putting away her handheld camera so she could really enjoy the waves.”It’s distracting to try and film at the same time,” said Mancuso, “I wanted to enjoy the waves.”
Off-season Mancuso trains and surfs in Maui, Hawaii to prepare her for competitions. Mancuso posted some photos taken before and after her surf session on her Facebook page and captioned it, “This Sochi experience couldn’t have ended in a better way! I surfed the black sea today!!!! And Ted won GOLD!!!”
