Celebrated Olympic swimming champ Michael Phelps was arrested early Tuesday morning for driving under the influence, police say.
The arrest happened in Phelps’ hometown of Baltimore, Maryland around 1:40 AM local time.
According to police, Phelps, 29, was also charged with excessive speed and crossing double lines within the Fort McHenry tunnel on I-95 in Baltimore. Police also say he was driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone.
The report went on to say that Phelps was “unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests.”
Phelps was taken in to custody and later released.
This is the second DUI incident for the Olympian. In 2004, a then 19-year old Phelps was arrested for drunken driving and sentenced to eighteen months probation.
In 2009, a photo was made public of Phelps with a marijuana pipe.
Several attempts by media outlets to Phelps’ representatives for a statement have not been returned.
