Former Star Player Webber Looking to Become NBA Owner

After retiring, many athletes get into coaching, broadcasting, or scouting. Chris Webber is aiming for the top.

The former star for the Michigan Wolverines, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings, is reportedly leading The Webber Group, a set of investors aiming to purchase the available majority ownership stake of the Atlanta Hawks. Webber, who has amassed over 100 million dollars in salary and investments, is expected to play a limited role in the financial aspect of the deal.

Webber would mainly function as the face of the group and could potentially play a large role in basketball operations, but would still join a short list of former NBA players to become prominently involved in team ownership, with Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan being the most famous. He is currently a NBA analyst on TNT, an Atlanta-based network.

The Hawks are for sale after a racially charged email authored by former owner Bruce Levenson and circulated among employees was made public, compelling him to remove himself as majority owner.
