Aaron Hernandez Arrested for Possible Link to Murder, Dropped by NFL Team

Former New England Patriot tight end Aaron Hernandez has been taken into custody by Massachusetts State Police and North Attleborough Police for his possible connection in the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd. The arrest occurred at 9AM (EST) this morning when Hernandez was loaded into a police cruiser while wearing red shorts, sneakers and white v-neck t-shirt.

It has not been announced what charges have been filed, but Hernandez has been at the center of the murder investigation since last week. The body of Odin Lloyd was found on June 17 in an industrial park by a nighttime jogger, just a half-mile from Hernandez’s home. The 27-year-old had been shot execution style in the head.

Due to the breaking news of Hernandez’s arrest, the New England Patriots have decided to drop the 23-year-old from the team. The team issued a statement this morning saying:

“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”

Last summer, Hernandez signed a contract with the New England Patriots worth $40 million over five years.

This is not the first time Hernandez has had trouble with the law. The former NFL player is currently facing a civil personal-injury suit, filed by Alexander S. Bradley, who alleges that Hernandez shot him in the arm and face after the two left Miami club Tootsie’s Cabaret in February.

Police officials are expected to announce what Hernandez is being charged with this afternoon.
