Bandleader Mark Knopfler announced the official breakup of Dire Straits. Dire Straits’ biggest selling album, 1985’s Brothers in Arms, has sold over 30 million copies. It was the first album to sell a million copies on the then new compact disc (CD) format.

Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind 1997” – rewritten and rerecorded with new lyrics paying tribute to the recently-deceased Princess Diana – sold a record 600,000 copies in one day in Britain alone. It went on to become the biggest-selling single of all time.

Legendary Johnny Cash is laid to rest in the family cemetery at Hendersonville, TN, next to the grave of his wife June Carter Cash. She passed away four months prior to Cash.

Johnny Ramone, guitaris/songwriter of The Ramones, died of prostate cancer at his home in Los Angeles, California at the age of 55.
