James Brown debuted his latest single “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” on an episode of ABC-TV’s Shindig! The song was Brown’s first song to hit the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
1972
David Bowie released “John, I’m only Dancing” in the U.K. The song was not released in the U.S. until 1976.
1979
Leon Russell and Willie Nelson’s remake of the Elvis Presley classic, “Heartbreak Hotel,” was No. 1 on the Billboard country chart. The song marked as Russell’s only chart-topping hit. It was also Presley’s firs No. 1 hit.
1983
Lee Greenwood wrote the song “God Bless the U.S.A.” after a Soviet Union pilot shot down Korean Airlines flight 007 in 1983. Claiming the plane was a spy plane, the government ordered the pilot to destroy the Boeing jet, killing 269 people – sixty-two Americans were on board, including a congressman from Georgia, Lawrence McDonald. In protest, Johnny Cash cancelled a Soviet Tour.

Mick Jagger’s “Let’s Work” single was released. It was the only track from Primitive Cool included on Jagger’s greatest hits album

Recognized as a major influence in the evolution of jazz, Louis Armstrong was honored on a U.S. postage stamp.

David Bowie opened his on-line Internet service provider business, Bowienet. The service offers basic Internet services and exclusive Bowie news and releases.

Little Big Town’s “Boondocks” video debuted on CMT. It became their first Top 10 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.
