Throwback Thursday: Louis Armstrong Was Born

1901

Louis Armstrong – singer, bandleader, and trumpeter – was born on this day. Armstrong had many hits including the 1964 US No.1 “Hello Dolly!”, 1968 UK No.1 “What A Wonderful World” and more. He died July 6th, 1971.

1927

Jimmy Rodgers recorded “Sleep Baby Sleep” and “Soldier’s Sweetheart.”

1956

Elvis Presley’s song “Hound Dog” was released.

1958

Billboard Magazine introduced its “Hot 100” chart. The first number one song was Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool.”

1964

The Kinks single “You Really Got Me” was released in the U.K.

1966

The Temptations’ “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep” was released.

1980

John Lennon and Yoko Ono began recording their album Double Fantasy.

1987

The soundtrack for Dirty Dancing was released, a few weeks before the movie hit theaters (August 21st).

1990

Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for four weeks straight.

2008

Brooks & Dunn earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
