Judy Garland recorded “Over The Rainbow.” It was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939) and was sung by Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale.

1957

Jerry Lee Lewis makes his first national TV appearance, singing “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” on NBC’s The Steve Allen Show.

1961

The Tokens recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The song (originally a Zulu folk song called “M’bube” and Anglicized to “Wimoweh”) soared up the charts to become the No.1 hit in the nation.
