1971

Born on this day was hip-hop legend Tupac Amaru Shakur (born Lesane Parish Crooks). Shakur died from bullet wounds on September 13th, 1996. His single “How Do U Want It/ California Love” was No. 1 in 1996 in the US.

1972

David Bowie released his fifth studio album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, a concept album telling the story of a fictional bisexual alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust. The album reached No. 5 in the UK and No. 75 in the US.

1976

The TV show “The Jacksons” began airing for four weeks on CBS. It featured The Jacksons plus sisters Latoya, Rebbie and Janet.

1978

The film adaptation of the hit off-Broadway play Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, opened in US theaters. The movie became an instant cult classic.

1989

Smokey Robinson launched his own perfume for women, called “Smoke.”

1990

Born on this day was English singer and musician John Newman, who is best known for the track “Love Me Again”. The song peaked at No. 1 on the UK singles chart in July 2013.

Phil Collins – known for his tracks “True Colors”, “A Groovy Kind Of Love”, “One More Night” and more – received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Tim McGraw’s “Grown Men Don’t Cry” moved to the top spot on the Billboard country singles chart.
