Despite speculations, at least one song on Beyoncé’s latest Lemonade album, titled “Love Drought,” is confirmed to not be about her husband, Jay Z.
In an interview with Genius, the co-writer of the popular song – Houston rapper Ingrid Burley – stated that the song is not about the rapper, but rather a dig towards the singer’s label, Parkwood Entertainment.
“I wrote ‘Love Drought’, in all seriousness, because I was very frustrated with the label two years ago,” said Burley to Genius. “I was very new. Two of the people who were running the label at the time had lied to me and told me that Beyoncé wasn’t currently listening to any new music.”
Burley explained that while she was at a writing camp in L.A. for Beyoncé, four days after the incident, she was listening to some music with producer Mike Dean when someone on the singer’s A&R team told her that Beyoncé had made notes on the music she was interested in.
“And then I’m like, ‘They just told me she’s not listening to any new music.’ I was so pissed… as I’m looping this beat” – citing the “ten times out of nine” lyrics – “I just couldn’t get out of my head the fact that they lied to me.”
Burley concluded that, “The only way that I could really get over it was to like, ‘Heh heh, she’s going to sing the song I wrote about her label one day.’ That’s really what the whole song was about.”
