“Take Five” Jazz Pianist Dave Brubeck Dies at 91

Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, best known for his 1959 hit “Take Five” by The Dave Brubeck Jazz Quartet, passed away this morning due to heart failure at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut.  He was 91 years old, dying a day short of his 92nd birthday.

Brubeck worked with his long-time musical partner,  alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, to write what would become jazz standards for The Dave Brubeck Jazz Quartet.  The group would become best known for their 1959 album  Time Out, one of the top-selling jazz albums of all time.

The legendary jazz pianist would go on to win the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement award in 1996 and the BBC’s Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
