Drummer and founder of Iggy and the Stooges, Scott Asheton, passed away Saturday of an undetermined illness. Iggy Pop confirmed the news on Sunday via his Facebook page.
“Scott was a great artist. I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother,” said Iggy. “ He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family.”
Asheton and his brother Ron, who passed away in 2009, helped form the band in 1967. In 2010, The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Scott Asheton is survived by his wife Liz and daughter Leanna.
