Actress and singer Katey Sagal’s first passion, long before becoming a successful television star, was music. Sagal has showcased her musical talent on and off screen, and has now released her first album in nine years.
The Sons Of Anarchy and Married…With Children star’s new album is titled Covered, and is full of cover songs that influenced Katey throughout her life. Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin,” Gillian Welch’s “Orphan Girl” and Jackson Browne’s “For A Dancer” are a few of the songs that made it onto the album where Sagal added her own “little touch.”
Before becoming a television star, Sagal was a member of “The Group With No Name” in 1976 before joining Bette Midler’s backup group “The Harlettes” in 1978. The SOA star recorded and perform back-up vocals on the self-titled solo album for legendary musician Gene Simmons and on Olivia Newton-John’s 1985 single “Soul Kiss”.
She continued to sing throughout her career, but no as often as she would’ve liked. Her husband, SOA creator Kurt Sutter, gave her the opportunity to use her hidden talent and sing on the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack.
“I love to play music, and I was playing gigs and doing a lot of songs off my other records. I thought ‘I really need to have some new songs.’ I’ve been trying to write, but I realized that I like the process of recording song and finding songs,” Sagal told Billboard Magazine. “It kind of came out of necessity of wanting to get to it. I couldn’t wait on myself anymore.”
