After 11 years of success in Europe, Australia, Japan, Spain, Russia, South Africa and Italy, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” musical, which originally debuted in London, is finally head to North America this month.
“We Will Rock You” is built around songs by legendary rock band Queen and written by British comedian Ben Elton. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore their freedom in music, fashion and live music in a dystopian future where musical instruments and composers are forbidden. Twenty-four of Queen’s biggest songs are featured in the musical, including “Another One Bites the Dust,” ”Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” ”We Are the Champions,” ”Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You.” Elton worked closely with the surviving members of Queen and the family of the late singer Freddie Mercury to playwright the story.
The original West End production opened at the Dominion Theatre in 2002 and producers are finally ready to bring this musical to the U.S.
“We decided to take our time,” says producer Jane Rosenthal, whose Tribeca Theatrical Productions, which she co-founded with Robert De Niro, will put the show on the road. “We decided to let America wait.” Rosenthal added.
“We Will Rock You” stars Brian Justin Crum and Ruby Lewis. The tour officially launches in Baltimore on Oct. 15 and will perform in more than a dozen states and Canada over the next year, ending next summer in Los Angeles.
